La basílica catedral de Santa María la Mayor[1] o la Mayor a secas pero más conocida en Marsella como La Major, del occitano) es la Catedral de Marsella . Se trata de un imponente edificio, único en su género en Francia, que evoca el Oriente por su estilo románico-bizantino.Fue construida, según los planos del arquitecto Léon Vaudoyer, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX durante una época de gran crecimiento económico, social y demográfico para la ciudad. Siendo así coetáneo de magníficas construcciones como la estación Saint-Charles , el Palacio de la Bourse , el Palacio Longchamp , el Palacio del Pharo y la basílica Notre-Dame de la Garde .
