La abadía lleva el nombre del obispo de Autun, Saint-Léger, martirizado en el siglo VII y cuya madre se había retirado a la abadía de Notre-Dame de Soissons. Fundada en 1139, la abadía es la continuación de una comunidad de canónigos seculares cuya primera mención se remonta a 1070. No se pierda el claustro al más puro estilo gótico, con sus ricas decoraciones, así como la cripta y su capilla.
