La Colegiata de la Virgen María fue fundada en 1131 en Licques por Robert dist el barbu, que regresó de la Primera Cruzada; luego se convirtió en la abadía de Nuestra Señora de Licques, de la orden de los Premonstratenses, en 1132. Lambert de Ardres menciona a Robert dist el barbu en estos términos: «Robertus quidam de Liskis cum Barbâ vol Barbatus nomi natus quod tune temporis qui prolixam barbam non haberet effe minatus diceretur et in derisum et despectum haberetur».
