Consisten en ocho cámaras de cierre en forma de óvalo, características del Canal du Midi, y nueve esclusas, que permiten elevar barcos a una altura de 21,5 metros a lo largo de una distancia de 300 metros. La escalera de esclusas fue construida originalmente como una de ocho subidas, que junto con la novena esclusa al noreste) permitió a los barcos cruzar el río Orb a nivel y reingresar al canal río abajo. El nombre de "nueve esclusas" data de esta época.
