Consistono in otto camere di blocco a forma ovale, caratteristiche del Canal du Midi, e nove porte, che permettono alle barche di essere sollevate a un'altezza di 21,5 metri su una distanza di 300 metri. Il tratto è stato originariamente costruito come un blocco di otto, che insieme al nono blocco a nord-est) permetteva alle barche di attraversare il fiume Orb a livello e rientrare nel canale più a valle. Il nome "nove chiuse" risale a questo periodo.
