De består af otte ovalformede slusekamre, som er karakteristiske for Canal du Midi, og ni porte, der gør det muligt for både at blive hævet 21,5 meter over en afstand af 300 meter. Slusen blev oprindeligt bygget som en otte-stegs hævning, som sammen med den niende sluse mod nordøst gjorde det muligt for både at krydse Orb-floden i niveau og derefter genindtræde kanalen længere nede ad strømmen. Navnet "ni sluser" stammer fra denne tid.
