Napoleón 3 acudía con mucha regularidad a tomar las aguas a Plombières para tratar su reumatismo. Muy pronto, el Emperador quiso un edificio de su tamaño que pudiera acoger a todos los altos dignatarios de Francia. Para su proyecto, recurrió a dos arquitectos, Charles Isabelle y Nicolas Gilot. Crearán un magnífico escaparate del esplendor de Napoleón III y del Segundo Imperio. En el interior de la sala principal, una bóveda de 18 m de altura corona majestuosamente el pasillo de 65 m de largo. Uno se encuentra inmerso en una catedral de piedra tallada bañada por la luz. La gran revolución de estas termas que datan de 1861 es también que tenemos en el mismo lugar, el cuidado, edificio en el centro, y el alojamiento, las dos alas a cada lado.
El conjunto de las termas Napoleón 3 está catalogado como monumento histórico desde 2001.
Actualmente abiertas al termalismo, los curistas siguen acudiendo a las plombières para tratar sus reumatismos.
