A finales de 2005, el presidente francés Jacques Chirac inauguró el Centro Europeo del Resistente Deportado. Este centro se encuentra a pocos pasos del sitio de Struthof, el único campo de concentración nazi en territorio francés. Estamos aquí en el valle, a unos cincuenta kilómetros al sur de Estrasburgo. El campo de concentración de Natzweiler-Struthof vio morir a deportados de toda Europa. Se trataba sobre todo de prisioneros políticos, opositores al régimen nazi y resistentes. Noruegos, holandeses, belgas o franceses, llegaron aquí a partir de 1943 a la espera de su juicio en Alemania. Después del verano de 1944, fueron acompañados por gitanos y judíos, transferidos de guetos y otros campos de concentración. Todos fueron puestos a trabajar.
