Fundada en 1099, la iglesia de Carcans fue sede de un priorato hasta el siglo XIII. En ese momento, se estableció como parroquia. Carcans era una parada para los peregrinos en su camino a Santiago de Compostela desde Saintonge. A modo de recordatorio, la iglesia cuenta con una magnífica estatua de Santiago en traje de peregrino que data del siglo XVII y está clasificada como monumento histórico. La iglesia actual fue construida en 1870 en estilo neogótico; el altar, de la misma época, es de mármol policromado. El órgano del coro, de fabricación alemana, se instaló en 1971 durante la restauración de la iglesia.
