Este puente de carretera fue construido por Gustave Eiffel entre 1879 y 1883, sobre la base de un primer puente colgante (1839-1869) que fue arrastrado por una tormenta. Destruido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue reconstruido por su nieto. La rampa de acceso se apoya en arcos de piedra que, vistos desde abajo, tienen el aspecto de una catedral gótica.
