Ce pont routier fut construit par Gustave Eiffel, entre 1879 et 1883, sur les bases d'un premier pont suspendu (1839-1869) emporté par une tempête. Détruit pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, il fut rebâti par son petit-fils. La rampe d'accès est supportée par des arcades de pierre qui, vues de dessous, ont une allure de cathédrale gothique.
