El nombre del antiguo pueblo de Der, de origen celta y que significa "roble", recuerda el antiguo bosque galo, hoy talado. El lugar ya estaba habitado en época romana, con el descubrimiento de las subestructuras de una villa, un fragmento de un mosaico de la cual puede verse actualmente en el museo Saint Loup de Troyes. Ya a mediados del siglo IX, Montier-en-Der poseía un precaire en Pel, es decir, tierras que se arrendaban, y a mediados del siglo XII, la abadía de Montiéramey tenía un priorato en Der. Los habitantes de Pel y Der se llaman Reignats, Reignados. La iglesia de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen data del siglo XVI. Se pueden ver - restos de vidrieras del siglo XVI - la placa conmemorativa de la fundación de la iglesia por Jacques Trénard (Fuente: Lucien MOREL PAYEN, Troyes et l'Aube).
