El Truyère es un discreto río de media montaña, principal afluente del Lot, que atraviesa el Macizo Central a lo largo de casi 170 km. Nace en Lozère, a 1.450 m de altitud, en el corazón de la Margeride
En sus aguas ácidas evoluciona una trucha fario con una marcada pigmentación, muy virada al amarillo brillante cuando el pez "toma el sol" en el fondo arenoso.
Las poblaciones de pececillos y gobios, y luego de cacho en la parte baja del río, se mezclan con las poblaciones de truchas autóctonas. Aguas abajo de Le Malzieu, algunas percas y lucios del embalse de Grandvals, del que se alimenta el Truyère, compiten con las truchas en su búsqueda de alimento
En el conjunto del departamento de Lozère, el Truyère está clasificado como río de 1ª categoría.
