Situadas en el extremo de la cordillera del Ballon d'Alsace, las colinas de paja ofrecen una magnífica vista de los valles del Thur y del Doller
La palabra "Rossberg" hace referencia a los caballos salvajes que vivían allí hasta el siglo XVI (Ross significa caballo en alemán).
Se distinguieron las granjas de la Obere, la Untere y la Mittlere Rossberg; sólo esta última sobrevivió y mantuvo una actividad agrícola, de las otras sólo queda un montón de piedras
Con la llegada de esquiadores a partir de 1906 a las pistas del Rossberg, se construyeron chalets y un remonte. Los rastrojos son una vasta zona de pastoreo donde se pueden encontrar vacas, ovejas y caballos
En el centro del macizo se encuentran las Vogelsteine (1165 m), promontorios rocosos de origen volcánico, lugar predilecto de la frágil flora rupestre.
