El monumento está dedicado a las víctimas militares de las campañas coloniales francesas del siglo XIX: Madagascar, Senegal, Crimea, Tonkín, Argelia, Túnez y "otras colonias", así como a la guerra franco-prusiana de 1870.
También se menciona la Primera Guerra Mundial, pero el Monumento a los Muertos de la Ciudad de Boulogne sur Mer está dedicado más específicamente a este y a otros conflictos posteriores.
Consagrada el 18/09/1898 por Edmond Lormier, escultor; Durenne A., fundidor; y Decroix, arquitecto.
