Este monumento en particular se centra en las víctimas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945) , a diferencia del Monumento a los Muertos, de mayor tamaño, en la Place des Victoires, que también conmemora la Primera Guerra Mundial y conflictos posteriores.
Menton fue ocupada por Italia en 1940 y posteriormente por Alemania. Su ubicación cerca del Bastión, que en su día sirvió como punto de defensa, refuerza la importancia histórica de este lugar como puesto fronterizo y lugar de batalla y conmemoración.
