Chawton es un pueblo y parroquia civil en el distrito de East Hampshire en Hampshire, Inglaterra. El pueblo se encuentra dentro del Parque Nacional South Downs y es famoso como el hogar de Jane Austen durante los últimos ocho años de su vida.
La historia registrada de Chawton comienza en la encuesta del Domesday de 1086. En el siglo XIII, había una casa señorial real. El propietario, John St John, sirvió como deputy de Eduardo I en Escocia. Enrique III visitó la mansión en más de cuarenta ocasiones. Los descendientes de John Knight, quien construyó la actual Chawton House en el tiempo de la Armada, añadieron a ella y modificaron el paisaje de maneras que reflejan cambios en política, religión y gusto. Uno de esos descendientes fue Elizabeth Knight, cuyos progresos estaban marcados por el repique de las campanas de la iglesia y cuyos dos maridos tuvieron que adoptar su apellido. Más tarde, en el siglo XVIII, el hermano de Jane Austen, Edward Austen Knight, tuvo éxito y en 1809 pudo trasladar a su madre y hermanas a una cabaña en el pueblo.
