El pueblo de Balcombe es famoso por una serie de murales sobre la Primera Guerra Mundial en su Victory Hall. Los murales fueron presentados en un programa de televisión sobre la guerra en 2005. Ese no es el único vínculo entre Balcombe y las guerras. Fue el lugar de nacimiento del sargento de color Frank Bourne DCM, quien luchó en la batalla de Rorke's Drift en la Guerra Zulú, y quien fue el último sobreviviente británico de esa batalla cuando murió en Dorking en 1945.
