HMS Statesman era un submarino de la clase S de la Royal Navy, y formaba parte del Tercer Grupo construido de esa clase. Fue construido por Cammell Laird y botado el 14 de septiembre de 1943. Hasta ahora, ha sido el único barco de la Royal Navy que lleva el nombre Statesman.
Pasó el tiempo entre agosto de 1944 y agosto de 1945 con la Flota del Este, donde tuvo una carrera llena de acontecimientos. Hundió el buque de carga del ejército japonés Sugi Maru No.5, veinticinco embarcaciones de vela japonesas, el arrastrero japonés Matsujima Maru No.3, cuatro costeros japoneses, incluyendo Nippon Maru No.19, Nanyo Maru No. 17 y Nippon Maru No.14, un pequeño petrolero japonés, cinco pequeñas embarcaciones japonesas no identificadas, diez pequeñas lanchas de desembarco japonesas, tres barcazas japonesas y un naufragio abandonado a la deriva en el estrecho de Malaca, descrito como probablemente un costero.
