Fue fundado en septiembre de 1899 en la ciudad de Blyth por Fred Stoker, quien fue el primer secretario del club antes de formar una práctica como médico distinguido en Harley Street de Londres. Pensó que era apropiado nombrar al equipo en honor al ejército espartano griego con la esperanza de que los jugadores lo dieran todo mientras entraban en la 'batalla' en el campo de juego.
