La Ceremonia de Apertura de los XXVIII Juegos Olímpicos se celebró el 13 de agosto de 2004, en el Estadio Olímpico, ubicado en la ciudad de Atenas, Grecia.
Más de 72.000 espectadores observaron uno de los espectáculos más costosos en la historia. Fue en su época el evento más visto a lo largo del mundo, con un total de más de 4,5 mil millones de personas observándolo a través de la televisión. Además, fue el primer evento transmitido a nivel internacional en formato HDTV, a través de la cadena estadounidense NBC y la japonesa NHK.
