Es la ciudad más occidental de Croacia. Su municipio incluye Bašanija, el punto más al poniente del territorio croata.La ciudad tiene una población de 7769 habitantes , con una población municipal total de 13 064 . Como muchas otras ciudades en Istria, Umag tiene un población multiétnica. Los croatas comprenden la mayoría de la población con el 59,6% del total; los italianos el 18,3%, los serbios el 3,8%,los eslovenos el 2,2%, los bosnios el 1,7%, los albaneses el 1,3% y los que regionalmente están declarados como istrianos el 1,57%.[3]
