Au recensement de 2001, la municipalité comptait 12 901 habitants, dont 59,64 % de Croates, 18,33 % d'Italiens, 3,77 % de Serbes et 2,19 % de Slovènes et la ville seule comptait 7 769 habitants.C'est une commune bilingue croate/italien.Umag est mentionnée pour la première fois au VIIe siècle par l'Anonyme de Ravenne, mais elle existait déjà à l'époque romaine. De nombreux vestiges romains comme la villa rustica ont été découverts le long de la côte.
