El pueblo de Macugnaga escapó en 2007 de una catástrofe. En el Monte Rosa ocurrió entonces un espectacular alud de rocas. Fue el resultado de una inusual ola de calor en toda Europa. Los 300.000 metros cúbicos de roca aterrizaron en un lago estacional seco. Si el lago hubiera estado lleno, habría causado una enorme ola, con consecuencias catastróficas para el pueblo de Macugnaga aguas abajo. NewScientist lo llamó uno de los primeros signos del cambio climático.
