The village of Macugnaga escaped a disaster in 2007. A spectacular rock avalanche occurred on Monte Rosa at that time. It was the result of an unusual heat wave across Europe. The 300,000 cubic meters of rock landed in a dry seasonal lake. If the lake had been filled, it would have caused a massive wave, with catastrophic consequences for the village of Macugnaga downstream. The NewScientist called this one of the first signs of climate change.
