Het dorp Macugnaga ontsnapte in 2007 aan een ramp. Op de Monte Rosa vond toen een spectaculaire rotslawine plaats. Het was het gevolg van een ongewone hittegolf in heel Europa. De 300.000 kubieke meter rots landde in een droog seizoensmeer. Als het meer gevuld zou zijn geweest, zou het een enorme golf hebben veroorzaakt, met catastrofale gevolgen voor het dorp Macugnaga stroomafwaarts. De NewScientist noemde dit een van de eerste tekenen van klimaatverandering.
