Avola es una localidad italiana de la provincia de Siracusa, región de Sicilia. Posee una población de 31.697 habitantes.[3]
Según algunas fuentes, el origen de la ciudad hace referencia a la Hybla mayor, ubicada cerca de la costa sureste de la Sicilia. La zona, antiguamente habitada por los sicanos, fue invadida desde Sicilia y se convirtió en el escenario de la lucha por la supremacía en la región. El término «Hybla» no es griego sino prehelénico, probablemente sicano, y es el nombre de una diosa .
