El territorio municipal de Sorano se extiende por la parte oriental del Área del Tufo. Limita al norte con el municipio de Castell'Azzara, al este con las ciudades de Acquapendente, Proceno, Onano y Latera, al sur con la ciudad de Pitigliano y al oeste con las ciudades de Manciano y Semproniano.
La capital municipal se ubica a 379 S.n.m. sobre un acantilado de toba que, desde el este, domina un tramo del curso del río Lente. Esta localizado en el centro de un territorio de colinas, intercaladas con valles. La zona de menor altitud se encuentra en el Pianetto di Sovana, cerca de la localidad del mismo nombre, con una altitud alrededor de 270 metros, mientras que las zonas de mayor altitud, de tipo montañoso, son la cumbre donde se encuentra la aldea de Montevitozzo y en el Monte Elmo , dos cotas que destacan claramente en el paisaje montañoso.
