El Alcantara es un importante río de la parte oriental de Sicilia que recorre 52 kilómetros antes de desembocar en el mar Jónico. Su cuenca hidrográfica se extiende 573 km² por las provincias de Mesina y de Catania.[1]
El río nace en los montes Nebrodi, a una altura de 1 395 metros en la sierra Baratta en el territorio del municipio de Floresta, en la provincia de Mesina. En su recorrido hacia el mar pasa por el norte del monte Etna, dirigiéndose en dirección sur, entra en la provincia de Catania, al norte del municipio de Randazzo, y recibe agua de su afluente el río Flascio. Después de recibir el flujo de éste, su curso se desvía en dirección al este, marcando el límite norte de la montaña del volcán Etna, teniendo al norte los Nébrodes y los montes Peloritanos, determinando también la división de las provincias de Mesina, al norte, y Catania, al sur.
