En el siglo IX se inició la construcción del castillo. Fue concebido como protección contra los ataques húngaros. A partir del siglo XII, el castillo pasó a manos de la familia Della Scala. La familia poseía siete castillos cerca del lago de Garda. Además del castillo de Lazise, también estaban los castillos de Malcesine, Sirmione, Soave, Torri del Benaco, Valeggio sul Mincio y Villafranca di Verona. Después del periodo de los escalígeros, como se conocía a la familia Della Scala, el castillo cambió de propietario con frecuencia. Estuvo bajo la autoridad de Gian Galeazzo Visconti y Francesco I Gonzaga, entre otros. Desde 1439, formó parte de la república de Venecia. El actual propietario es el municipio de Lazise.
