Después de mediados del siglo XIII, cuando la parte de la ciudad al norte del Arno quedó completamente rodeada por las murallas de la ciudad, la fortificación continuó en el área al sur del río, conocida como Chinzica. Esta fortificación, especialmente en el sureste, fue impulsada por las crecientes tensiones que se habían desarrollado entre el gobierno de Pisan y la República Florentina.
En los primeros años del primer dominio florentino (a partir de 1406), se fortalecieron aún más algunas murallas pisanas, incluida la Torre de Stampace, alrededor de la cual se construyó una fortaleza rectangular: las crónicas informan que se utilizó como prisión en 1426.
