La iglesia fue construida según un diseño del arquitecto milanés Cecilio Arpesani para el cardenal Maffi de Pisa. Fue inaugurado en julio de 1916.
En 1919 las imágenes de los lunetos fueron modeladas por Ludovico Pogliaghi, como menciona Ugo Nebbia en su libro dedicado a Ludovico Pogliaghi. En los mismos años, Pogliaghi recibió el encargo de hacer los ángeles candelabros para la Catedral de Pisa.
La iglesia es la sede de la parroquia; De 1981 a 1989, Giovanni Santucci, actual obispo de Massa Carrara-Pontremoli, fue párroco de la parroquia.
El edificio de estilo renacentista románico, con claras referencias al románico pisano, presenta una llamativa fachada en dos niveles: el inferior está decorado con arcadas ciegas, mientras que la parte superior está iluminada por una serie de arquillos que enmarcan el rosetón central .
