La chiesa fu costruita su progetto dell'architetto milanese Cecilio Arpesani per il cardinale Maffi di Pisa. Fu inaugurato nel luglio 1916.
Nel 1919 le immagini delle lunette furono modellate da Ludovico Pogliaghi, come ricorda Ugo Nebbia nel suo libro dedicato a Ludovico Pogliaghi. Negli stessi anni Pogliaghi riceve l'incarico di realizzare gli angeli candelabri per il Duomo di Pisa.
La chiesa è sede della parrocchia; Dal 1981 al 1989 Giovanni Santucci, attuale Vescovo di Massa Carrara-Pontremoli, è stato parroco della parrocchia.
L'edificio in stile neoromanico, con evidenti richiami al romanico pisano, presenta una suggestiva facciata su due livelli: il livello inferiore è decorato da arcate cieche, mentre la parte superiore è illuminata da una serie di archetti che incorniciano il rosone centrale .
