Esta antigua arteria del tráfico de gentes y mercancías cannobinas lleva el nombre de S. Carlos Borromeo, quien realizó en el valle una visita pastoral en 1574. El santo durmió en Gurro, donde la espléndida “Casa S. Carlos” conserva su recuerdo. A lo largo del sendero, dos modestas capillas recuerdan el episodio de la pobre mula que transportaba a Borromeo y que, en el tramo donde el sendero empieza a descender hacia el valle de Cavaglio proveniente de Traffiume, derribó de la silla al ilustre peregrino, quien milagrosamente escapó de la desastrosa caída al abismo que le habría sido fatal. El recorrido conecta el Santuario de Re en Val Vigezzo con el Santuario de la Virgen de la Pietà de Cannobio y permite descubrir los rincones más sugestivos del valle Cannobino.
