Hay una estatua de Joop Zoetemelk en su pueblo Rijpwetering. Ganó el Tour de Francia en 1980 y se convirtió en campeón del mundo en 1985. Zoetemelk participó 16 veces en el Tour de Francia, siempre terminó la carrera (un número récord) y generalmente alcanzó un lugar entre los diez primeros, de los cuales seis veces fue segundo (de ahí su apodo de eterno segundo) y primero en 1980. Después de Jan Janssen (1968), fue el segundo ganador del Tour de los Países Bajos. En 1982, nuevamente fue segundo.
