Er staat een standbeeld van Joop Zoetemelk in zijn dorp Rijpwetering. Hij won in 1980 de Ronde van Frankrijk en werd in 1985 wereldkampioen. Zoetemelk nam 16 maal deel aan de Ronde van Frankrijk, reed hem altijd uit (een recordaantal) en behaalde meestal een plek bij de eerste tien, waarvan zes maal tweede (vandaar zijn bijnaam eeuwige tweede) en eerste 1980. Na Jan Janssen (1968) was hij de tweede Nederlandse Tourwinnaar. In 1982 werd hij wederom tweede.
