En el siglo XV ya se hablaba de "Blocksyl". En 1581, la ciudad fue fortificada. Alrededor de 1600, Blokzijl obtuvo diversos privilegios, como el nombramiento de su propio alcalde. Blokzijl estuvo bajo dominio español durante un largo tiempo y en esa época le fue bien. La ciudad estaba situada en el Zuiderzee y era un punto de comercio importante. Blokzijl obtuvo derechos de ciudad en 1672.
Hoy en día es una ciudad turística.
