El Museo Nacional de Prisiones se encuentra en un antiguo asilo en Veenhuizen. El museo informa de manera interactiva sobre el manejo del crimen y el castigo en los Países Bajos desde 1600 hasta el día de hoy. También se presta atención a la historia de Veenhuizen como pueblo penitenciario. Aunque la historia de Veenhuizen se remonta a 1381, se ha hecho conocido como pueblo penitenciario desde la construcción de tres grandes instituciones para huérfanos, mendigos y vagabundos. El iniciador en 1823 fue la Sociedad de Beneficencia. Aunque esto se basó originalmente en la participación voluntaria, poco a poco se convirtió en una obligación y más tarde - tras la toma de posesión en 1859 por el gobierno nacional - en castigo. Todavía hay tres prisiones en funcionamiento en Veenhuizen.
