Las Maasplassen se formaron por la extracción de grava, principalmente en el siglo pasado. Esto dio lugar a grandes lagos conectados. La grava fue depositada alguna vez por el Mosa.
Las Maasplassen de Midden-Limburg están situadas entre Roermond, Maasbracht y Heel.
Las Maasplassen son una atracción turística y también son una gran área de deportes acuáticos. A lo largo de los lagos hay diversos establecimientos de hostelería, puertos deportivos, playas de día, campings y áreas naturales, como Beegderheide y Leudal. Al este de Roermond se encuentra también un gran parque nacional, De Meinweg.
