Se encuentra al noreste de Leeuwarden, en el lado este de Oenkerk y al sur de Roodkerk. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 640 habitantes. Hasta 1948, Molenend era una aldea que pertenecía a Oenkerk. En 1948, la asociación Dorpsbelang presentó una solicitud para el estatus de pueblo al municipio de Tietjerksteradeel. Hasta entonces, era costumbre que el estatus de pueblo se otorgara a asentamientos con una iglesia, y Molenend no tenía una. Debido a que el asentamiento contaba con un café, una escuela primaria y asociaciones, se concedió el estatus de pueblo el 8 de octubre de 1948.
