El pueblo se originó alrededor de la esclusa construida en 1448 en el Grecht, que se llamó Woerdense Verlaat. La construcción creció en dos regiones: Holanda y Utrecht. La parte holandesa, situada al oeste del Grecht y al sur del Kollenwetering, pertenecía al distrito de Nieuwkoop.
La parte de Utrecht, al norte del Kollenwetering y alrededor del pastizal, formaba parte del distrito de Wilnis, mientras que la parte situada al sur de este pertenecía al distrito de Kamerik. Después de 1813, los distritos se transformaron en municipios y Woerdense Verlaat quedó dividido en tres municipios.
Solo el 1 de enero de 1989, tras una reorganización municipal, Woerdense Verlaat fue incorporado al municipio de Nieuwkoop, junto con una gran parte ilógica de Kamerik.
