El pueblo se encuentra al sureste de Stavoren y cerca del IJsselmeer. Junto con el cercano Mirns y Rijs, forma una comunidad colaborativa en muchos aspectos. Así, también existe una asociación conjunta para el interés del pueblo. Mirns fue hasta 1955 un barrio de Bakhuizen, y también Rijs fue durante un tiempo un barrio del pueblo. En 2021, Bakhuizen contaba con 1,045 habitantes. En el lado este del pueblo hay un parque recreativo. Dentro del área construida del pueblo, son visibles diferencias de altura debido a su ubicación, parcialmente sobre una colina de limo glacial que quedó después de la era glacial Riss.
