Acquoy es un village en la provincia holandesa de Gelderland. Es parte del municipio de West Betuwe y se encuentra a unos 12 km al este de Gorinchem. Según la leyenda popular, un "Jan van Arkel" fue el primero en haber asentado el pueblo de Acquoy, cuando regresó de las cruzadas en 1133. Sin embargo, esto es muy poco probable, porque no hubo cruzadas en el período alrededor de 1133. La primera cruzada fue de 1096-99 y la segunda fue de 1147-49. Algunas fuentes informan que el Jan van Arkel mencionado era en realidad Jan I van Arkel. Sin embargo, él vivió un siglo después y tenía el apodo de "de Sterke", que significa "el fuerte".
