Se encuentra al noroeste de Dokkum, al norte de Hantum, al noreste de Holwerd y al sur del Mar de Wadden. El núcleo del pueblo está situado en la intersección de la N358 con Aldbuorren y Opslach. En Hantumerweg comienza el Ternaardervaart. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 1,295 habitantes. Dentro del pueblo también se encuentran los asentamientos 't Schoor, Teijeburen, Visbuurt y Vijfhuizen. Anteriormente, también se decía que Drieboerehuizen pertenecía a Ternaard.
