En la segunda mitad del siglo IX se menciona por primera vez en documentos la Tierra de Arkel.
Durante el siglo XIII, los señores de Arkel participaron en varias Cruzadas para la liberación de Tierra Santa.
El imponente castillo de los Señores de Arkel se encontraba en la orilla oriental de la ciudad de Gorinchem. Este castillo fue demolido en 1413.
