Dans la deuxième moitié du IXe siècle, le Land d'Arkel est mentionné pour la première fois dans des documents.
Au cours du XIIIe siècle, les seigneurs d'Arkel participèrent à plusieurs Croisades pour libérer la Terre Sainte.
L'imposant château des seigneurs d'Arkel se trouvait sur la rive est de la ville de Gorinchem. Ce château a été démoli en 1413.
