In de 2e helft van de 9e eeuw is er in documenten voor het eerst sprake van het Land van Arkel.
Gedurende de 13e eeuw namen heren van Arkel deel aan meerdere Kruistochten ter bevrijding van Het Heilige Land.
De imposante burcht van de Heren van Arkel stond op de oostelijke over van de stad Gorinchem. Deze burcht werd in 1413 afgebroken.
