La aldea se encuentra a aproximadamente 3 kilómetros al este de Wolvega y pertenece a las aldeas más grandes del municipio. Contaba en 2021 con 1.045 habitantes. En un documento de 1204, el nombre aparece por primera vez como Holenpathe. En un documento de 1320, se escribe "Oldeholpat". Olde- se añadió en el siglo XIV tras la fundación del nuevo Holtpade: Nijeholtpade.
