Byen ligger cirka 3 kilometer øst for Wolvega og er en af de større landsbyer i kommunen. I 2021 havde den 1.045 indbyggere. I et dokument fra 1204 optræder navnet for første gang som Holenpathe. I et dokument fra 1320 skrives "Oldeholpat". Olde- blev tilføjet i det 14. århundrede efter grundlæggelsen af den nye Holtpade: Nijeholtpade.
