‘Venes más amables’. Debido a la extracción y aprovechamiento, aquí también ha desaparecido la mayor parte del turba, como en toda Holanda. Las turberas de turba eran un combustible importante. Solo queda el 2% del área original de turba alta, de la cual la mayor parte ha sido degradada y se ha secado. Afortunadamente, el Fochteloërveen aún posee un núcleo con turba alta viva.
La turba alta se alimenta únicamente de agua de lluvia. Debido a que el agua de lluvia limpia contiene escasos nutrientes, la turba alta es pobre en alimentos. Las plantas que crecen allí están adaptadas a esto. Son plantas raras y especiales, cada una de ellas.
Natuurmonumenten se esfuerza por preservar el Fochteloërveen. El núcleo de la política es asegurar suficiente agua limpia y pobre en nutrientes. Esto es vital para una zona de turba alta saludable. Por eso, Natuurmonumenten ha estado trabajando durante años para hidratar esta área.
